'2010 Legacies Now' agency gives Mal-U $10,000 for event

Malaspina University-College will get a little richer thanks to some new funds headed its way.

On Monday, the 2010 Legacies Now Program doled out $10,000 to support Malaspina's Canadian men's national volleyball championship tournament slated for March.

"Getting a chunk of money like that to help put on an event like this is basically invaluable," said Malaspina athletic director Bruce Hunter, noting the tournament will cost about $40,000.

"We need all the help we can get."

Up to 5,000 people, including players, coaches, volunteers and supporters will descend on Malaspina thoughout the three-day event, which will help showcase some of the best volleyball in the country, Hunter said.

"2010 Lagacies Now is committed to building B.C.'s reputation as a premier sport event destination and maximizing sport hosting opportunities leading up to and beyond the 2010 Winter Games," said Carla Qualtrough, sport tourism and inclusion initiatives director.

Camela Tang, of Team Nanaimo, said the funds mean a lot to the city.

"This is terrific for Nanaimo," she said.

More than $100,000 has been received under the 2010 Lega ies Now program in Nanaimo, Tang said.

Tourism, Sport and the Arts Minister Stan Hagen said sport event hosting in a growing sector of tourism and one that benefits communities on many different levels.

"Benefits include positive direct economic impacts, growing community spirit, inspiring local athletes and developing volunteer capacity."
